i feel like you're underestimating how shitty the story was
[ skeptical!!!! but this sounds too subjective to argue, so fine. ]

[There's no such thing as "Christmas" where Aang comes from, but he finds he rather likes the concept of getting gifts for his friends as a token of appreciation. Unfortunately, there's a shortage of ready gifts in Oska proper - the librarians chide him quite soundly when he tries to sneak out of the library with a few extra books underhand - and so he's forced to use his noodle, brainstorming until he comes up with the perfect gift.
Of course, all handmade gifts take time, and so it's several days after the ball that Zenyatta finally receives his gift, taped lopsided to his door. There's no signature on it, but the figures depicted should make it abundantly clear who the gift is from.

Congrats, you are now the proud owner of one (1) slightly stale noodle portrait of yourself and Aang. Happy holidays!!!!!!]

[There Zenyatta goes again, knowing just what to say and when.
Asher's anger in particular is dangerous, although this is something he has yet to understand.]

[Zenyatta will find that Asher's response takes some time.]
That's not what I meant.
[Not exactly.
In a way, though, he's gotten the answer he wanted.]
You sound like you have life all figured out, is all.
And don't get me wrong, I'm not a hater. I... I get a little annoyed by what you say sometimes, sure, but I
[He appreciates that someone cares, at the very least.
Concern, worry, but in a way that isn't overly coddling. Asher could have done with more of that growing up.]
I guess that's because you're right, most of the time.
[And he hates it.]

[He is, because until he set foot in this place, he hasn't quite been able to grow from that point.
Adulthood comes with responsibility, earning. What has he earned, in life? Almost nothing. Everything's been handed to him on a silver platter.]
Thanks.
[At last, he's beginning to understand it.]
Sorry for... Bugging you, or whatever it was that I was doing.
I'll go.

["But your conversations do not bother me in the slightest. I still enjoy speaking with you, Asher."
Maybe it's the alcohol or the fact that the year is coming to a close and giving him time to reflect, but the young man suddenly feels a flicker of something he can't place very well. It's warm and wonderful and lovely, but he can't say he's experienced it often.
He's chased it so very much, but it always seems to slip right through his fingertips.]
Yeah, I will.
[How does he explain to Zenyatta, that despite being a robot, in some ways...
He seems more human than so many of the others he's met in his life?]
It's no biggie.
You're a chill dude.

[As if this entire conversation wasn't obnoxious enough:]

[On the evening of New Years, a little package has been left out for Zenyatta. It's been wrapped in a thin, decorative cloth. Upon unwrapping, inside is a diligently folded origami, and a note left inside that's probably for Zenyatta. It's not 100% clear that it's from Hanzo since he hasn't left his name, but it's a good bet anyway.]
Thank you for saving him.
