CHARACTER INFO.
NAME: Zenyatta Tekhartha
CANON: Overwatch
AGE: 20 years old, but he's a robot, so like mentally, is he 20? is he 40? who knows.
APPEARANCE: here. yep, he's a robot. i can never play a normal, human character it seems.

CANON POINT: Before the Overwatch recall.

BACKGROUND: So there's this here but the info is like across several different pages so I'm going to just summarize it here.

Omnics are essentially A.I. robots. The background there is that corporation named Omnica started building omniums to "pioneer the use of automation and self-improving software algorithms in robotics manufacturing." Eventually the omniums started "malfunctioning" and the company was shut down for a multitude of reasons. In a short time after that, the now "defunct" omniums began to turn themselves back on, and began producing a new generation of omniums, which were called omnics. Cue the generic "robot uprising, they want humans dead, etc" that you'd expect of the Terminator movies, except this time, it was called the Omnic Crisis, and happened about thirty years before "present canon time." Omnics wanted humans dead (for logical reasons I guess??), and began waging full-fledge war on humans (although it is also implied that this might be due to a few very powerful A.I. units ones controlling all omnics). Cue then the creation of Overwatch, etc etc, Overwatch helped stop the war, reached peace somehow, the end.

Flashforward about ten years after the initial crisis, Zenyatta was created. For most of Zenyatta's life, he was a part of a very specific group of omnics known as the Shambali, who are said to have experienced a "spiritual awakening." By being capable of their own thoughts, and responsible for their own actions and choices, they found this as proof that they posess souls as much as humans do. This was not, at first a very popular opinion among humans embittered to omnics from the crisis, and so they formed their own monastery high in the mountains of Nepal, where they could practice their beliefs in peace. Eventually a leader among the Shambali stepped up, known as Tekhartha Mondatta. He took on essentially a Dalai Lama like role, and became something of a public speaker to promote peace between omnics and humans.

PERSONALITY:

And then there's Zenyatta, who is just a wee bit different from most of the Shambali monks. Yes, he still believes in a lot of the ideas his fellow monks, like that all omnics have souls and are capable of their own thoughts and actions, that they are no different than humans and that both races should live in peace. But the Shambali are rather dedicated to their idea that the only way relations between humans and omnics can be repaired is through steadfast adherence to Shambali teachings. Zenyatta, on the other hand, thinks that the best way to repair the broken relationship between the two is to go out and engage with people on a personal level. To do this, Zenyatta left the monastery to wander the world. He doesn't regret doing so, but does feel nostalgia on occasion, as the omnics there were the closest he's ever had to something like a family.

So Zenyatta traveled the world, seeking to spread the word of peace and share the wisdom he found through his adventures. Through his journeys, he encountered many different people, leaving them a little more enlightened than they had been, before moving on. Eventually, he met Genji Shimada, a man who was tormented by his own thoughts due to being part machine, and part human. Genji hated his machine half, but Zenyatta was determined to help him learn to accept himself. It took effort breaking through Genji's internal anger and rage, but with time and perseverance, Zenyatta was able to gain his respect. With that respect, the other was able to learn to open his mind, and accept himself, as well as forgive others. Zenyatta considers Genji one of his brightest students due to this sort of turn around, and in turn, Genji thinks of Zenyatta as his teacher.

Benevolent is a good word to describe Zenyatta. He's an omnic of peace (for the most part), he doesn't seek out a fight. However, in the times of conflict between human and omnic, he will stand up to protect the innocent. The innocent... tending to be omnic, as they are often the victim of human violence, but there are plenty of humans who act against humans just the same.

One thing of note, is that even if he will stand up to fight, he never loses his temper. He knows there are many prejudiced against him and his kind, but it is core to his beliefs that being compassionate is essential. Character dialogue between himself and Zarya, a Russian woman who bears a long-standing grudge against omnics, shows that she is resentful of omnics (Zenyatta included), and that she will be keeping "an eye on him." His reply is that "he will watch her back in turn." He knows that humans have dealt with a lot of violence by the hands of omnics during the crisis, and so he won't hold it against them should they harbor negative feelings, but he will do his best to change their mind by simply being who he is.

As for what kind of "teachings" Zenyatta does subscribe to, it's a mix of several people/schools of thought. Buddhism and Taoism are both major inspirations for the Shambali ways of thought, and there are also ideas mixed in from Zhuang Zhou, the Dalai Lama, and various other philosophers (like even René Descartes). It's really more of mashup of so many different things (mostly of Chinese/Indian inspiration), because even though the Shambali omnics have taken to Nepal as their "home," as robots that were created in factories around the world, they have no one place of cultural origin. The one thing that is consistent with the Shambali omnics is that the "Iris" they refer to is essentially their version of "God."

Being in a monastery, surrounded by relatively strict teachings, and a determination to find true spiritual enlightenment can tend to make someone very serious. Somehow though, Zenyatta's sense of humor shines through on occasion. But sometimes the best solution to one's problems is to keep an open mind and a light heart, something he wouldn't be able to do if he couldn't "laugh" every once in a while, or prompt others to. He isn't a comedian by any means, but the infrequent joke or "silly face" every now and then can help someone more than words of wisdom will.

ABILITIES:

As an omnic, it's a pretty generic "that's a robot" type biology. Water is a big no-no, and omnics are weak to hacking-style mind control, as well as EMP. Zenyatta in particular, given that he was not built for war, he is generally pretty weak as compared to other omnics (such as Bastion units). Most of his "health" consists of a shield that will regenerate pretty quickly, but still. Please do not hurt the weak baby robot.

Zenyatta's main abilities, aside from being a robot and thus not needing to do basic human functions, revolve around his orbs. There is a collection of about nine orbs around his neck and pretty much any given time. Sometimes more!! Of which he can throw them at people, and that doesn't do a heck of a lot of damage really. Unless he threw a bunch of them really fast.

What's more important about them is that he can cause said orbs to have "status effects." The "Orb of Harmony," when lobbed at someone, heals them so long as they are within a certain range of Zenyatta. The "Orb of Discord" makes it so the target takes more damage when being attacked, but it doesn't do anything harmful in it's own right. This is a bit of headcanon based on voice lines, but both of these work around the idea of also affecting the emotional state of the target. In order for someone to accept the use of Harmony, the have to be harmonious to the idea of being helped, in order for someone to be susceptible to Discord, they probably are already plagued by negative thoughts (i.e. because they are fighting).

This is the part where it gets really Video Game. Because he's a support class/healer, one of his abilities is that he reaches ... such a heightened state of mind, he can temporarily become invincible/invulnerable (but can't attack), and heal a lot of people within a certain radius of himself. It'd basically work as a big ol' mass heal.

INVENTORY: Just his clothes, and his orbs. Monks don't need no material possessions.
